Today I thought about running, but I didn't. Even considering returning to something which so recently wrecked my body is a great sign. Maybe tomorrow a mile with my kids.

I was thinking about my thinking (metathinking) and while my body still hurt after the recent race, I loathed even considering running. I didn't want to look at running magazines (which I normally love to read), didn't even want to put away my running shoes, didn't want to consider my next race or the next time I would run. It didn't matter. I was in pain and when every step required effort, all my conscious thoughts went to making sure I didn't fall flat on my face. As soon as the pain turned the corner, my thoughts turned again to running. I haven't yet picked up a running mag, but I probably will later. I thought about running again today, I'm starting to formulate a plan to get ready for my September marathon, and I ordered some new low weight shoes for my upcoming 10K. Funny how the mind works. Maeslow's hierarchy of needs for sure.

PM: 2 miles with my 8 year old son. He's going to run the 5K in next month's Big Sky State Games, so he's amped to get some miles in. We stopped every 1/2 mile to give him a break. I'm proud of the little guy! My legs felt okay. Quads were a bit sore but everything else felt good. I enjoyed the slow pace.

Crazy how that works, isn't it? My goal is to always feel very motivated and driven before I start a hard training cycle...never want to start one already dreading the runs!

Brilliant! Get stuck into a running mag and you'll find something in there that'll ignite the passion. You might flinch in pain as the snowdrift of memories come back but I think it's like having babies - after all the hullaballo quietens the pain eases and then is forgotten, and as sure downhills kill quads, you'll want another baby. If any women read this, I'm sure Russ's pain is worse than having a baby or twins for that matter.

really?????worse than having a baby?hmmmm, of course since I haven't run a race longer than a 10k, I am not completely sure, but maybe if you poop a watermelon you can decide which pain is worse!!! lol (hopefully no-one is offended by that comment!)

Ah, Peg. Mom always said you were the one known to hold your tongue. Wait - she never said that. Hilarious!

Bam, I think you're spot on with the birth analogy. Maybe not quite as hard as birthing a baby (maybe a cantaloupe) but forgetting about the pain. I highly doubt I'll do a mountain run like this anytime in the near future, but I'm really excited about my upcoming marathon.

Andrea, it is crazy how it works. Amazing, really!

Ah, Russ. You are so hooked. You are as bad as 50 other people on this blog. Welcome to the club.

Hahahaha! Thanks for the welcome Kam. I wish I were fast like 50 people on this blog, but oh well. I'm working on it! (from SNL "Middle Aged Man" skit: http://snltranscripts.jt.org/90/90cmiddleaged.phtml)
