Started running seriously in March 2010. Married 22 years to a hot momma and we have 3 boys, 1 sweet girl, 2 dogs, 3 2 0 1 cat, and 6     4 5 6 3 5 3 1 2 0 chickens (until Spring 2019 when we'll start over). As of September 2018 I'm looking for work... yay. I'm on the local School Board.

I wanted to start off the new year right, so I started on the treadmill with a goal of at least 6 miles, and then thought 7 would be good, but 8 was far so I then focused on 8. After 6 I felt great so my new goal became 10. The treadmill I'm using goes up to 99:59, so that was my final goal. I wanted to see what happened. Would the TM stop, turn over, or what? I felt tired after 9, so the last 15 minutes were a slight struggle but not too bad. Achilles felt good nearly the entire time. It was sore afterward so I'm not out of the woods yet but close to it. I iced it just now and it's feeling pretty good. Hopefully double digits will be normal for me once more. By the way, the timer turned over to 0:00. Good time for a cool down.

Question that I need some advice: registration for the Bighorn 30K/50K/50M/100M is this Saturday and the shortest races fill up quick. I'm turning 40 in April & want to do something cool to prove that I can do it. Do I run the 50K again or up my game and do the 50 miler? Or just do the 30K and focus this year on marathons?

I'd suggest you find a decent track meet and enter the elite 800m and see how you go - please video the race as I'd love to see you storming up the home straight:)

Seriously, go for what feels right. I remember your report on the 50k. Read it again as this might help you make up your mind...

Actually, Russ, I'd suggest the 30k and focus on marathons. Your marathon pr is down to 3:31. You could get that substantially lower this year just by being more consistent etc.

Happy new year Russ! Ah, Bam beat me to it... I recall something along the line of "immediate thoughts: i don't want to do this ever again" or something like that at the end of your 50k report! personally I can't wait to turn 40 so that I can participate in masters T&F events (yes, they also have a M35 category but I'd get destroyed...). The USATf masters calendar for your region should be at this link (it's blocked at my workplace...): http://nwmtf.oregonathletics.org/documents/schedule_000.pdf , maybe you'll find something interesting for the summer. How about a 5 minute mile? ultimately your call of course, but whatever you decide, please don't pick the convertible and blondie for your big 4-0 !

Hahahaha! I'm so busted. I did write that I would never again do the 50K, but in the past few months I've recanted that statement. Never say never. It really was the last 6 miles that ruined it for me, and I can do anything for 6 miles. That being said, Bam, I think you're right that I should focus on the marathon. Maybe the 30K it will be!

Great advice from both of you, and Claudio I'm sticking with my hot wife and 1998 pickup truck! I did tell her that I was going to start calling her my girlfriend and that my girlfriend and I needed to go to Vegas for my 40th. She was okay with that.
