After reading about stress fractures on an Ortho website, I think I might have one. I scheduled an appointment with the Dr. today, well his PA as he wasn't available until Friday but she'll consult with him. I really hope it isn't this but it's been a week now with no change and if it's a SF then it will be 6-8 weeks of no running, and my 50K is 16 weeks from this Saturday, so that will give me only 8-10 weeks to ramp up. Boo. Hoping it's not a SF.

Fingers crossed here, too. Have you changed shoes? Are your shoes old? Was there a trauma or tweak in the area? I've been reading your last week of entries, and it seems like a sudden flare-up. Kind of SF like. But, it could be something else, too. Sometimes stuff will start hurting just due to inflammation, and then the cycle of inflammation and pain and more inflammation gets out of control. Your icing will help, but so would some ibuprofen. You won't be sure it's a sf w/out a bone scan, so before you shell out $$$ for that, maybe try a regimen of high dose ibuprofen. Sorry it's hurting you, man.

Hmph. Well, no changes to note. New shoes for Christmas, but the same model I've put 600 miles on. Other new model I've only put on 40 miles and not recently. The day it happened was when I did hill repeats, so maybe going fast uphill? I've gone around in my head of what might have caused it and can't figure it out. I also iced it in a bucket for 15 mins last night and after the foot thawed there was no change in discomfort. That's a first for my aches & pains. I keep thinking back to my conversation with my PT friend who is very good, and a runner, and when I showed him what hurt he had a quizzical expression and said "there's no reason it should hurt there." For other foot pains he has been able to pinpoint exactly what was going on & fix the issue. Here's to hoping for the best... Thanks for the good vibes Kam.

Yuck, I hope it's not any thing significant, my fingers are crossed too!

I would be surprised if running uphill would cause an injury, cuz forces are much lower when running uphill. Perhaps you should try a different model shoe to rotate with the current model. Each shoe has different properties and will concentrate stress in different spots. You've added more volume, so maybe in the same shoe, it's just too much, but if you rotated two different shoes, you could spread the pain around...assuming it isn't a sf, of course.

Good thoughts Kam - maybe I'll try that. I just bought a trail runner so sneaking this past Kaylene might be tough... I just got back from the PA and she didn't give me new info as help from everyone on the blog has me well versed. She seemed pretty up on running and asked all the right questions. Told me to take 7-14 days off running, do cross training, and see how it feels. If no difference come back and start with x-ray then on to the $$$ imaging (I think they image your wallet first to make sure you can afford it). I'll ice daily, 800 mg ibuprofen 3X/day, and cross train. Hopefully that will fix it. She hoped it might be a joint as there are multiple bones & joints where it hurts. If not, might take 2-4 weeks for a SF to show up on xray, if ever. Spin class, here I come!
