Thought I would do 5 today at lunch, but when I got to the Y locker room I decided to do Boot Camp instead. I think it was a wise choice. We warmed up with a run around the block and normally I'm one of the top people. I let just about everyone pass me today, and that was hard, but it was where my legs were. Mid way through the workout we ran around the block again and I was much faster, being warm, but had no oomph. To be expected, but it confirmed to me that my plan for this week of 42 miles was way exorbitant. Maybe 25-30 miles is a more likely plan, but even if it's less than that I'll still feel good about it. The legs are definitely still healing.

And on another note, the barn cat we got last year and forgot to spay (since we rarely see her), decided to give birth last night on the deck by our master bedroom at 11:30 PM. We knew she was ready to have her babies, but why couldn't she have done it during the day? Honestly. Anyone want a kitten?

Hey Russ. Have you rolled out your legs? That always helps. You can have one of your kids go after it with a rolling pin. "Wanna make dad scream like a girl?" Also, sit and soak in a cold stream for 10 minutes or so after your run. Have you any stream access? I bet Montana streams are more cold than Utah streams right now.

Smart to cut the miles. The minus 10 won't make any difference for the marathon. 4 weeks to go. I'm excited. What are your remaining planned long runs?

Kam, I keep forgetting to roll my legs. I need to do that tonight. And yes, the kids would LOVE that chance. I don't have access to any streams near my house, but I did sit in one after my race for a bit. I wimped out and could only do it for a minute. I was feeling too good.

On Friday I sent an e-mail to your kfill5 address with my remaining plan attached. On the plan I've got long runs of 14 this week, then 18, 20, and 12 before the marathon, with weekly mileage plan of 37, 52, 48, and 34. A few good workouts are in there. Also, I'm planning on doing a 5K the Friday night before the DesNews. It's our Montana State Games and Meb Keflezghi is our guest of honor so how could I not run? So excited to see Meb.

If you opt to do the full 14 this weekend, take it very slow and easy. Run 11-12 at 9 minute pace or slower, and if you are feeling punchy, pick things up to marathon pace at the end. If the zip isn't there, skip the MP miles.

That 5k will be awesome. I suppose you'll have a new PR after that.

With no stream access, I guess you are going to have to suck it up and have an ice bath. $2-3 at the gas station for a bag of ice, then sit in it (or in and out of it) for as much as you can stand, up to 15 minutes. It really does some magic, drawing increased blood flow to try and warm the leg muscles, and concomitantly drawing out the bad stuff that's making you sore.

Concomitantly? You should quit reading journal articles. Good call on the ice baths. I did a few of them the first summer I ran, but haven't needed them on my long runs since that time. These next four weeks are a great time to revisit that strategy.

Also good advice on the 14 this weekend. I know it will be a struggle, but if I have a 9 minute mile in my head that will help. I'll probably go run on that trail I've been using as it's got some great soft surfaces and is easy to run slowly.

Don't make fun of concomitantly. That's a legit word.

From Russ on Wed, Jun 26, 2013 at 15:45:55 from 74.114.3.253

I'm not knocking it. I'm just a purblind fool who didn't know that great word existed.
