6 MP miles today, uphill the first half. My marathon pace is an 8:15 so I tried to keep it close to that up and blast it down. I did pretty good up, felt good, slight breeze so perfect. Temps 65 and overcast. The downhill felt pretty good, but at 4.5 miles I was tired and done. My legs were beat and my HR was still too high for downhill miles. I pulled it back, telling myself to just do 8:30 the rest of the way. That trick worked. After a while of not thinking about it I pepped up and finished my last mile fast enough to have my average just under my pace. Saw a bachelor herd of muleys and then jumped a rooster pheasant. Hunting season is only one season away....

AP 8:11. Splits 8:35, 8:27, 8:32, 7:45, 8:02, 7:43.

Sometimes surges help you get out of a pace and heartrate rut. Try going 1m/mile faster than your current pace for 20-30 seconds, then relax back down to comfortable pace. Often, it will be 15-30 sec/mile faster than before.

Thanks Kam - never would have thought of that myself. I'll give it a shot on my next pace run as I'm sure I'll need it.
