5 miles this morning wearing my new Salomon XT Wings 3 shoes. Great name. I like the rigidity of the shoe, but my heel slides a bit and my ankle bone hits the shoe. I could see the ankle bone chafing being a big deal so I might try a thicker insert. The best part of the shoe is that I hardly felt the rocks under my feet on the gravel road. It was odd to hear my feet clunk, clunk, clunk on hard packed dirt or the few steps of pavement. First time having a stiff trail shoe, so we'll see how it goes. At $140 a pair ($119 with my discount) I'd better like them a lot. I'll call my shoe store to see how much time I have before I can take them back.

AP: 8:48. I might go to Boot Camp again today. Better to go now and build up muscles than to not go and get into high miles in 4-6 weeks with no muscle buildup. Not sure how some people do doubles - it wears me out. I guess it's all about practice.

Noon: Boot Camp. I need to stop reading RAD's blog. She does double & triple workouts in a day and isn't THAT much younger than me, so I think I can do it too. It's pretty inspiring. I'd told myself earlier in the week that I'd do Boot Camp once per week so I can keep cross training. Today after my 5 I thought BC at lunch sounded fun. Boy, is it a great workout. I feel worse after an hour of this than I do with a 20 mile run. I guess because with 20 miles I'm using muscles that are pretty strong, and BC is using all these muscle groups that have been in the witness protection program.

The shoe name sounds like a maxi-pad. "With wings!!"

My BIL Dave has the Hukkas, and swears by them for trail running. I hope yours work out after you break them in a little bit. Maybe the good ride will compensate for the chafing over time.

JD ran Salmon one time; check out his race report. It's mostly dirt roads, from what I remember. You should come run Huntsville this year; there will be a healthy contingent from the blog, and then we can do Salmon in 2014. It's a good meeting place, in the relative middle.

So true about the shoe name. They supposedly wick moisture well also.

I'd love to do Huntsville this year and Salmon the next. That would a blast. I think the hardest part will be missing my boys' football games that weekend. I'll talk to Kaylene and see. Last year a guy from Billings did Huntsville but he's doing Salmon this year. It would be easier if I could find a ride.

Does Dave have the Hokas? It seems like Hokas and Salomons are the most popular trail shoes with smatterings of other logos on there. Not that I'm really a trail guy, but I play one on TV.

Yeah, it's the Hokas. He loves them, says the ride is unbelievable. For the price, it better be. But he's 220-230 lbs, and if he can run in comfort, it's gotta be worth it. With any luck, you'll have a bye week for whichever marathon you choose. How early does the schedule come out? Could you lobby for your bye over Huntsville weekend?

I think the schedule comes out pretty late. I think Huntsville is worth missing a game or two for, it's the travel that's the biggest part, and I'm sure my wife would want to come with and visit family. I'll check with boss lady. About the Hokas, I'd love a pair, but I can't part with that much dough plus I hear they only last half as long. So that's like 3-4 times the price of a normal shoe. Yikes. They do look cool though, in a Stay Puft Marshmallow Man sort of way. (had to Google that - who knew it was spelled Puft? perplexing)
