1 mile on the trail, but after 1/2 mile I realized I had some inside business to take care of, so I turned around and drove to the Y to run on the treadmill. It was a very wise decision.

Ran 4 TM miles at 2%, first 2 at 8:34 pace, next at 7:56 pace, last at 7:24 pace, last 1/4 at 6:22 pace. The first trail mile was soooo slow, a 10:00 pace. My legs were a bit sleepy still.

The plantar fasciitis wasn't near as bad over the weekend, so I'm following the symptoms from the literature. When I run fast on hard surfaces, it hurts after running. When I run slower on softer surfaces it doesn't hurt as bad. I had Kaylene use a rolling pin on my legs Saturday night and I thought she'd taken up a new profession as a PT, it hurt so bad. My left hamstring right above my knee is super tight, and my right calf just above my ankle is super tight. I think the rolling pin helped a lot, and the calf rolling helped my plantar fasciitis, I think. It makes sense that a tight calf makes the PF tight so I'll have her keep doing that. I'm feeling pretty good about the DesNews though. My plan is to run 20 this Saturday, which is 2 1/2 weeks out, then my taper begins.

I can't run yet but tomorrow I'm going to get up early and do some stretching and walking. I'm thinking If I spend the next couple of weeks doing that it might help in the long run. If you're like me, you probably don't stretch near enough.

Before I started running seriously I stretched before and after each run because I thought that's what you're supposed to do. I attended a Jeff Galloway seminar a few years ago and since then I've stopped stretching. He let us know that there is no evidence that stretching helps distance runners, but there is evidence that it hurts. I figured I'd try the experiment and so far, so good. I do use a foam roller to roll out the kinks but for the most part I start slowly on the first mile and have a cool down walk at the end of every run. My current kinks are because I did too much too soon and too fast after my last race. All I can say is be smart about coming back. I'm sure the pain in your collar bone will help.

We runners who have put in a lot of work tend to get injured the most after a long layoff as mentally we're so far beyond what our physical body can do at the time. You and I both know that cognitively, but it's so much harder to put into practice when it's you lacing up the shoes. Be wise and you'll be successful. I'm excited for you to get back at it!

I know what you're saying about stretching. What I plan to do is all related to stretching my stride movement so I can run like a Kenyan :-) My goal is to get my legs more flexible so I can stride out and back further. Right now the back part of my stride is very limited so to run faster I can only stride faster. Anyway, that's my theory. :-)

I'm ready to do something although I'm not supposed to do anything for another 2 weeks.

Great plan. I should do more things related to the legs like dynamic stretches, lunges, box jumps, etc. I get some of that when I do Boot Camp, but need to really kick it into gear this winter.

I hope those 2 weeks go quickly. I've never hurt my collar bone, but just thinking through the above exercises, nearly all of them involve the collar bone in some way or another. Yikes.

My stretch ing and activitie will be pretty mild for a while.

Russ, this Saturday is 10 days out from the race. I'm not sure about another 20 that close to race day. Maybe if you bump it up to tomorrow or Wednesday, you'd be all right. If you go for the 20, I suggest taking the first 14 easy, then do 5@MP, then 1 mile cooldown. Take those 5 on a flat surface, so they'll be honest MP miles when fatigued. It'll be a good confidence builder.

Kam, I'm laughing pretty hard right now at my math (in)abilities! I really did think this Saturday was 2 1/2 weeks out, but I obviously didn't look very closely, so thanks for being observant and calling me on it. Last weekend's Thursday 5K effort, Friday MP miles, and Saturday's extended tired miles was a great last workout before the marathon. I'm changing plans now and will do 14 this weekend, with some solid race pace miles mixed in there as you indicated. Thanks coach! Looking forward to some nice pacing from you in 16 days. I'm afraid I may not be very conversational for most of the time (unless panting is considered conversation).

I'm looking forward to it, Russ. I don't care much about conversation. 14 sounds about right for this weekend.
